Hand washing is the single most important activity for preventing cross-infection in all working environments. Alcohol hand gels are becoming increasingly common place because of their broad antimicrobial activity, in particular against the MRSA superbug.
Whilst risks associated with MRSA infection continue to be of major concern, the newer superbug, Clostridium difficile has gained increasing attention as the most serious cause of antibiotic associated diarrhoea. Clostridium difficile is another very hardy bacterium and can survive outside the body for long periods of time, posing particular risk to vulnerable people such as those in hospital, nursing homes and institutions.
At present though, of paramount concern is the predicted spike in cases of H1N1 swine flu virus this winter as the weather gets colder. Whilst there has been a decline in rates of reported swine flu illness, numbers receiving hospital treatment remain high and the NHS is bracing itself for a tough winter.
Revised predictions released by the Department of Health show that at its peak week 1.5 million people may be ill. Whilst the majority of swine flu infections are mild, over 150 deaths have now been linked with the H1N1 virus and certain groups remain at high risk. The threat that swine flu still poses should not be underestimated.
To reduce the risk of catching or spreading swine flu:
- Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. Use a tissue.
- Dispose of used tissues carefully.
- Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or alcohol hand rub.
- Clean hard surfaces (e.g. kitchen worktops, door handles) frequently using a normal cleaning product.
Delf’s alcohol hand gel, HandiSan, offers a major step in the direction of infection control.
- Delf’s alcohol hand gel formulation, HandiSan, is unique in being effective not only against MRSA, but also against Clostridium difficile.
- HandiSan conforms to EN1500, EN12054, EN1276, EN13727 (MRSA) and EN13704 (C. difficile)
- HandiSan is effective against HINI swine flu virus*
[For further help on how to protect yourself from the swine flu virus, see the DOH publication ‘Pandemic flu – Guidance for businesses’] - HandiSan is as effective as agents used to kill H5N1 avian flu virus*
* tested by the Government Veterinary Laboratories Agency
Emollients are usually added to alcohol hand gels, however, this does not always prevent the skin from becoming uncomfortably dry. HandiSan’s advanced formulation also includes a rehydrating system that protects the skin from dryness and irritation, leaving the skin feeling well conditioned and smooth.
